| So it's been almost exactly a month since I've updated...wow. Not an incredible amount of stuff has happened here in Ada, especially since the fire that I mentioned in the last entry. There was a girl that was run over by a train, however, she wasn't an ONU student, so there wasn't too much of a reaction on campus.
I just had my interview for President's Club yesterday. For those who don't know (and that actually includes most of campus--it's almost a secret society), President's Club members act as sort of ambassadors of the school to alumni. Basically, everywhere that President Baker goes that has some relation to alumni, at least one member of President's Club is there. It's really a cool oppertunity. There was a whole misunderstanding about whether or not I made it to the interview phase of the application process, but I really don't want to type it out.
Thanks for those that have been giving me encouragement about the running. My training is going well, and I'm actually enjoying it. For anyone interested, the race course has been posted, and can be viewed here: http://adisneyworldsports.disney.go.com/media/dwws_v0220/en_US/pdf/06HalfCourseMap.pdf Beware, it's a pdf file, which means that race day could be here before it loads.
That about wraps up what's been happening around here lately. I'll be home in about two weeks. Finals loom in the near distance, so must get to work.
| It's been an...interesting weekend so far. Which is...um...interesting because my roommate and I were just commenting on Friday night how boring Ada was all of the sudden. Well, it certainly wasn't boring yesterday. First of all, in another residence hall (and please note that most of the following is pieced together from various sources so all of it might not be exactly true) someone was making an attempt to get back at one of the RA's. Apparently, there was a small chemical release device outside of her door. Thankfully, as far as I know nobody was hurt, and the people responsible were all expelled and a few arrested.
But that was only the first thing. Yesterday afternoon, about a block of Main Street caught on fire. We had a really windy day yesterday, so that didn't help matters. They put out a call to the students to set up a shelter for the people who were evacutated from the fire, and most of my hall showed up to help. We set up enough beds to accomidate about 80 or so people--we had no idea how many would be showing up. It ended up that one whole family--a mother, a father, two young children and a cat were evacuated from across the street from the fire. We also had two law students that basically lost everything in the fire. One of my best friends here and I, along with another guy who I didn't know well stayed in the student union unil 4:00 a.m. (if you cound the time change) to make sure that the people were well taken care of. We would have stayed longer, but security asked us to go back to our dorms. They figured that nobody else would be coming, and that if anyone needed anything, they'd be able to call security. My friend couldn't sleep--she was still worried about the people who lost so much in the fire. I was too, compounded on the fact that I had expected to be there all night, and had drunk an according amount of caffinated beverages, so I didn't actually get to sleep until 5:00 a.m. So, in summary, it's been an interesting weekend.
| I've got a few minutes, so I thought I'd actually update this thing. First of all, for those of you that don't know, I've come down with a bad case of ambition. Yes, I, Harry Walker, person of no prior athletic ability, plan to run a half-marathon next January. I've been at my campus' athletic facility almost every day since the middle of this past January. So far, so good.
Also, a girl down the hall and I are directing a production of The Complete Works of Shakespeare (abridged). It's a ridiculously funny show that takes all of Shakespeare's plays and butchers them down into 2 hrs. Speaking of which, I've got a read-through to get to. I'll try to update more often, but no promises.
| Just to confirm I'm still alive and breathing, I'll make this
post. Unfortunately, it's finals time here on the tundra, so I'll
need to get back to work. I have things to say.
Unfortunately, they'd take too long to type. So be patient.
It'll happen. Good things come to those who wait. [insert
other applicable cliche of your own choosing here] There, ya
happy?

| It's been a long time since I've updated. Wow. But I thought this warranted an update. The storm on Wednesday hit Ada really, really hard. There was about an inch and a half of ice accumulation. There were fallen tree branches everywhere, and around 2 a.m., the power went out. At that point, the water dept. had abouy t 20 mins of reserve water, which meant no showers--and very limited flushing. We knew that we wouldn't have classes on Thursday, but when Thursday morning rolled around and people could see how much damage really happened (which was a lot), they decided to cancel classes, and even close the campus, until at least Monday. They asked that everyone who could go home to do so. That means I'm on a surprise trip home until at least Sunday, probably later. I doubt they'll be able to clean up everything in just a few days, and as far as I know, my friends still on campus are without power and have very little heat. Mom and I offered to give anyone who wanted a ride up here and a stay in our guestroom, but everyone wanted to stay. I hope they made the right decision. I'll see if I can post some pictures that I took soon. | | |
